ndia once again dislodged England to retain the second spot in gold medal wins at Commonwealth Games. This is the best ever performance by India that has overall won 60 medals.
England that has failed to win a single gold has 24 gold medals in its kitty. But overall its gold medal tally is way ahead of India.
Meanwhile India’s gold medal tally touched 26th mark when ace shooter Harpreet Singh won a gold medal for India in 25 meter centrefire pistol shooting.
Earlier early today Deepika Kumari of India won a gold medal in Women's Recurve Individual competition.
Meanwhile we should not befool ourselves that we are the second highest gold medal winners. England’s tally doesn’t clearly tells the whole story.
England is not a country but merely a province of the United Kingdom (UK). There are two more provinces from UK that include Wales and Scotland taking part in the Commonwealth Games.
If we combine them together, they may even upstage Australia in overall medal tally and may match India’s gold medal tally.
Meanwhile the Indian medal winners are going to get richer. Many of the Indian gold medalists come from very poor background and the money being doled out by Indian government by any standard is substantial.
Indian government is paying fifteen lakh to a gold medalist and rupees ten lakh to silver medalist sna d six lakh to bronze medalist.
But this is not the only thing as several other state governments and government and private organizations are paying similar amount of money to the winners. UP government is giving exactly same amount to the winner as incentive while Railways is giving ten lakh rupees to the winner.
For many of the athletes who have won here at the Commonwealth Games, owning a small car is a dream. Owning a house in the city is dream for them. Now hopefully they will be able to fulfill many of their dreams.
